Essential Components of Reading
Reading Specialists help students achieve the Essential Components of Reading as mandated by the state of Virginia. Small group instruction helps us differentiate according to the needs of the student. Collaboration and planning with classroom teachers allows us to support their classroom instruction within our small groups. We follow the Loudoun Pathways to Reading and Writing model in grades K-2. Shared reading and writing, word work, and guided reading are various components of daily literacy instruction. Grades 3-5 use Literacy Framework and trade books to support their literacy program. In addition to working with students, we help teachers assess students’ reading skills using formal assessments such as PALS (Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening) and DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment). If needed, we also help them analyze and interpret the data to provide meaningful instruction. It is our hope that the work we do helps each student become a successful, lifelong reader.
