Literacy Instruction at Little River Elementary SchoolThe mission of the Loudoun County Public Schools is to teach all students to read and comprehend written text so that they may become independent readers and lifelong learners. Literacy instruction in LCPS is based on a comprehensive approach that supports the Virginia State Standards of Learning, is aligned with current research on how children learn to read and write, and is guided by the LCPS Culturally Responsive Framework, which ensures a welcoming, inclusive, and affirming environment for all; inclusive curriculum and assessment practices; and engagement and challenge through deeper learning for all students. At Little River, teachers use a structured literacy approach to provide explicit instruction in phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, written expression, and oral language. These structures include interactive read-alouds; whole-group lessons in phonological awareness, phonics, reading comprehension, and writing; assessment-based small-group instruction; and conferring with individual students to provide one-on-one feedback and instruction. Please click here for detailed information about the K-5 curriculum, including links to the VA Standards of Learning, LCPS Initiatives, the LCPS Culturally Responsive Framework, and much more!
