Welcome to Frederick Douglas Elementary! We are thrilled to have the opportunity to share this new journey with all of you! As a community, we have the unique challenge of opening a new school and brining to it all the wonderful qualities and experiences that each of us share. Mrs. Kroll will be the full-time counselor and Mrs. Cancelosi will be here on Thursdays and will primarily work with kindergarten. We will work hard to provide a secure and motivating environment for all the children at FDES. We will implement programs in the school that will help bring us together as well as support the children with any of the challenges they may face
Our school counseling program is designed to provide various ways of meeting each child’s needs. We will be going into the classrooms every other week for classroom lessons. These lessons are tailored towards all the children and focus on a wide range of topics such as study skills, time management and communication. We also provide small group counseling. Our groups are more individually focused and are designed to work on a child’s specific needs. We offer groups on anger management, changing families, self-esteem (Girl Power and Boys Groups), behavior management, friendship, social skills and stress management. We add additional topics if there is a particular need. Your child may tell you that they were in a “lunch bunch” which is something the children love! Children will ask to have lunch with one or more of their friends and the counselor just for fun! This is a favorite for us as well because it gives us an opportunity to get to know your children better. We may also see a child for individual counseling. A child can either self-refer themselves or the teacher and/or parent may ask that we meet with the child.
If you feel that your child would benefit from a particular group, please let us know. Our groups are on-going and are scheduled based on the need for the group. Group permission and sign up forms will be coming home with your child the second week of school. They are also available on our web-page under permission forms.
Please visit our web-site for resources that may be of interest to you. We will also be running various school programs that your child can participate in. Information will be coming home through-out the year regarding those.
Please feel free to call either of us with any questions that you may have regarding your child and/or our program. We can be reached at 571-252-1920, or via email at Jennifer.email@example.com, or Adria.Cancelosi@lcps.org.
We are looking forward to meeting and working with you and your child and anticipate a terrific year!
