5/17/13
- The girls track team finished as regular season champions and 3rd in the district meet last night. Highlights of last nights meet included Emma Gillies winning both the 800 meter run and the 1600m run. Other girls who finished in the top three included Gaynor Houghton 3rd in the 100 hurdles, Vanessa Oruma and Sam Purnell 2nd and 3rd in the trple jump, the 4 x 400 relay of Gaynor Houghton, Emma Gillies, Kate Parker and Sam Purnell finsihing 2nd and the 4 x 800 meter relay team of Jeela Fesharaki, Mariah Quintero, Jenna Goode and Abbie Goodness finishing 3rd. Over twenty girls qualified for the region meet and will be traveling to Fluvanna next Wed to compete.
- All newly-elected SCA members and all HR Reps for next year are reminded of the short meeting TODAY in L512 immediately at the start of lunch.
- Attention Senior members of the National Honor Society! Additional NHS stoles are available today in Mr. Brosh's room. This is for those students who have yet to pay NHS dues. Please bring your dues to Mr. Brosh. There are a limited amount of stoles available.
- Congratulations to Chase Smith, Kelly Sullivan, Harpreet Bhatal, Dylan Robbotti and Will Marques. They all have been Microsoft Certified. Chase Smith set the school record with a score of 967 out of 1000. If you are interested in becoming Microsoft Certified, see Mr. Gordon in room L514.
- The 2013 Visiting Author Program returns to Woodgrove on Wednesday, May 22 during open lunch. The local authors include Henry Cole, Marc Leepson and Carlos Laguna. They will be discussing the process involved in writing and publishing. They are planning to donate one of their volumes to our library. Mr. Cole and Mr. Leepson are Nationally recognized author and illustrators.
- International Thespian Society will meet today during lunch in the Black Box. All new indusctees must attend. We will vote today on our 2013 staff inductee.
- The cast of The Ugly Duckling will have a first read-through on Monday May 20th from 4-5:30. Cast members should plan to attend.

- Locker Cleanout is coming soon and WHS is going GREEN! Students who take the time to donate salvageable items will receive a small treat of appreciation. - All members of the girls tennis team are reminded to return their uniforms and locks to Coach Sharp in room 404.
- The Percussion Class, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble and the Jazz Band put on a great concert last evening. Congratulations to all the members of the band program for a wonderful evening.
- The Green Team will meet during the second half of FLEX today outside room 207 to collect recycling. We will also discuss plans for the locker cleanout. Go Green!
- Congratulations to Peter Volpone, Josh Cromwell, Alex Juzbasich and Mariah Quintero who all made all-district in the 3200m run yesterday and will be moving on to compete in the region meet next week. The district track meet will continue today here at Woodgrove, and all students and faculty are encouraged to attend and root on the Wolverine track team as they compete with all the Dulles District teams tonight for the district title.

- Congratulations to the Boys Varsity Soccer team on their 3-2 win yesterday against Loudoun County High School.
- Tomorrow night will be the spring pops concert for the Woodgrove Choirs. Come out and see this free show at 7PM in the auditorium. We'll be singing all types of pop music and selections from "Lay Miz". Don't forget to come out and see the band perform their fabulous spring concert tonight at 7PM as well!

- The Dulles District Track Championship Meet is being held here at Woodgrove tonight and tomorrow. Tonight at 5:30 the 2 mile race will be run with the rest of the events being run tomorrow. Please come down to the stadium to root on your fellow Wolverines as they compete against several hundred other athletes to take homw the District Crown.
- Congratulations top all of the guitar ensembles for their performance last night. This concert featured the intermediate ensemble, the award winning Hershey Park ensemble, and the multi-stylistic offerings of the Advanced Ensemble. BRAVO!
- The boys Varsity Soccer Team will have a brief meetnig during the first part of lunch today in room L603.
- The Boys Soccer teams ended their season last night with a win against Loudoun County. The Boys Junior Varsity won 1-0 with a goal scored by Brennon Windemuth. The Boys Varsity Soccer team won 3-2. Scoring was Erik Tejada with two goals and Parker Conrath.

- Congratulations to JV girls soccer on a great end to a fantastic season. The team won last night over Loudoun County 4-0 to conclude their season with an 11-2-3 record. The varsity team had a tenacious win over Loudoun County 5-2 victory. The grils secured a third place finish with this win. We will host the first round of the district tournament this Friday at 7pm. Please come out to support these ladies.

- The Woodgrove Choirs will have their Pops Concert this Thursday, May 16th in the auditorium at 7:00PM. Some of the songs on the program include Bohemian Rhapsody, Viva la Vida, Some Nights, I'm Yours, and Skyfall. Come out and support Woodgrove Choirs!

- Congratulations to the Woodgrove Music Department. The Woodgrove Music Department dominated the competition at the Music In The Parks Festival in Hershey Pennsylvania this past Friday. The Concert Band won 2nd place with a rating of Superior; the Guitar Ensemble won 1st place with a rating of Superior; the Orchestra won best overall and 1st place with a rating of excellent; the men's choir won 1st place with a rating of excellent, the women's choir won 1st place with a rating of superior, the mixed choir won 1st place with a rating of superior and best overall. WAY TO GO WOODGROVE!!!
- Congratulations to the following top finishers in the Keep the Faith 5k. In the Youth category, Ethan Caldas was 3rd, Ryan Dehler was 2nd, and Andy Herwig was the winner with a time of 23:09. For the Women, 3rd place was Andrea Elbaum, 2nd place was Sally Dehler, and 1st place was Christina Dongilli with a time of 26:53. For the Men, Timmy Kaufman was 3rd, Jackson Herwig was 2nd, and Ben Browning was the winner with a time of 20:57. Congratulations to the winners and thank you to all who participated. Over $2,800 was raised for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation!

- Congratulations once again to our Woodgrove TSA! TSA members competed at states this weekend and had great success. Lexie Amundson placed 3rd in the State in Prepared Presentation and will advance to nationals in Florida. The Manufacturing Prototype team of Russell Heivilin, Robert Tippett, Milo Burke and Kris Miller placed in top ten at states. And finally Russell Heivilin plavces in top ten also in Flight Endurance. - Now that we have the official results of Wednesday’s track and field meet between Heritage, Loudoun Valley and Woodgrove, there are a few more horns that need to be tooted. In the 100 meter dash, senior Daniel Youmbi broke the school record with a time of 11.01 seconds. In the 200 meter dash, junior Michael Alexander broke the school record with a time of 23.31 seconds. In the 400 meter dash, junior Josh Kenyon broke the school record with a time of 51.86 seconds. In the 4 by 100 meter relay, the team of Michael Alexander, Jalan Jester, Stephen Washington and Daniel Youmbi broke their own school record set last week with a time of 44.49 seconds. Lastly, in the long jump, Stephan Washington snatched the school record from Omar Safiani with a leap of 20 feet 2 inches. Along with Marc Tiaga’s shot put, that made six school records in one meet. Not too bad for a day’s work. Next up for the Wolverines is the Colonial Forge Showcase Invitational Saturday under the lights in Stafford, Virginia.

- The boys tennis team defeated Park View 9-0 yesterday. Bog victories came from Ben Browning, Ben Carpenter and Michael Lokie. Today is senior night for the boys against Loudoun County. Good luck!

Several athletes including Vanessa Oruma and Kate Parker came off injuries to district qualify in their events which for kate was the 300 hurdles and Vanessa in the long and triple jumps. Other qualifiers included Hayleigh Sternberg in the long jump and Alex Juzbasich in the 1600.

- The girls track and field team had a strong weekend finishing 4th out of 19 schools at the Apple Blossom Invitational. The following girls scored for the wolverines: Alex Juzbasich in the 3200, Asiah Robinison in the Long Jump and and 400 meter dash and Emma Gillies in the 800 meters and 1600 meters. The girls 4 x 100 relay team made up of Sam Purnell, Asiah Robinson, Jess Hornyak and Ashley Ahlers finished 5th and scored as well. The highlight of the day came early when the 4 x 800 relay team of Mariah Quintero, Jeela Fesharaki, Alex Juzbasich and Emma Gillies state qualified with a second place finish. Emma Gillies also state qualified in the 1600m and the 800m run. The girls will be home Wednesday for senior night and Viking Stew as they host rival Loudoun Valley and Heritage. Please plan to attend the meet which starts at 5:30 pm.

- The Woodgrove Boys Track & Field team competed at the Turner Ashby Invitational on Saturday. Omar Safiani and Daniel Youmbi placed 2nd and 3rd in the high jump while Josh Cromwell finished 4th in the 3200 meter run and Josh Siegel placed 7th in the 160 meter run, both with personal best times. Next up for the Wolverines is a home quad meet on Wednesday at 5:30 pm against Potomac Falls, Park View and John Champe followed on Friday afternoon by the Wolverine Classic, our home invitational against 13 other teams. Plan on coming out to support the track team.

- The boys tennis team defeated Millbrook 7-2 on Friday. Ben Browning, Will Koester, Ben Carpenter, Scott Clark and Max Harris had strong wins.
- The Woodgrove Key Club is hosting its third annual “Keep the Faith” 5K Walk/Run, a benefit for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, on Saturday, May 4th. The event is a twilight run which begins at 7pm on the Woodgrove cross-country course. Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in the male, female, and youth categories. Pick up your resgistration form during Open Lunch outside the cafeteria. Please help Faith Stone and all who suffer from CF by joining us in support of this important cause. Thank You!

That translated into almost 5,200 links! In 3rd place, Mr. Welsh's sophomore class with a per-student average of $7.59. Falling to 2nd place is Mr. Brosh's senior homeroom with an average of $8.92. And the dark horse in the race has won...Ms. Bingaman's sophomore homeroom with a total of $247.25, which is a $9.51 per-student average! Jersey Mike's is coming to you guys, soon. Last night, the girls tennis team had a fantastic come-from-behind victory against district-leading Briar Woods. Ledby senior co-captain Stephanie Purnell along with strong performances up and down the line-up including Rosalie Hoyle, Caroline Abramson, Casey Miller, Anna Mendonca and Mary Anna Adams, the girls handed Briar Wodos their first AA defeat by a score of 5-4. - The Woodgrove Boys Track and Field team began it's third season on Saturday at the Ram Country Invitational at Strasburg High School. After 2 years of building, the boys finished 2nd in a field of 14 teams and brought home 14 medals. Highlights included senior Omar Safiani winning the high jump with a leap of 6' 3" which qualified him for the State Championship and equaled his school record from last yar and the 4 x 800 meter relay team of Josh Siegel, Peter Volpone, Greg Nerantzis and Devon Kirk besting the field by almost 40 seconds in 8:33, just 6 seconds shy of the school record. Next up is a tri-meety on Wednesday at Loudoun County followed by the Turner Ashby Invitational in Harrisonburg next Saturday. Stand by for big things the Spring from your boys track & field team. They've worked hard for 2 years and the work is starting to pay off. In the words of Bill Shakespeare, "Now is the Winter of our discontent made glorious Spring by these sons of Loudoun." Go Wolverines!

- Your Woodgrove Academic Team defeated all of the schools in Loudoun County with a 170 point margin yesterday. This is the 2nd year Woodgrove has earned Champion status. The senior leaders were Carolyn Saunders, Evan Smith, Keegan Ottoson, Marissa Gillwald, and team point leader- Chris Miller. Great job team! Don't forget to watch the team on April 20th on NBC!

- The Woodgrove Key Club is hosting its third annual "Keep the Faith" 5k walk/run, a benefit for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, on Saturday, May 4th. The event is a twilight run which begins at 7pm on the Woodgrove cross-country course. Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in the male, female, and youth categories. - The Virginia High School Programming Competition was held at the University of Virginia on March 23rd. Woodgrove snet two teams to represent the school. 39 teams from around the state competed, and the Woodgrove teams placed 12th and 26th. Woodgrove was the second place team in Loudoun County, being narrowly edged out by the team from Loudoun Valley. Congratulations to all of the participants!
- There will be pit orchestra musical practice today after school. The Brass Choir will meet tomorrrow morning in the band room at 8:00am.

- 4 Woodgrove students went to the annual German Convention held at University of Mary Washington on Saturday, March 23. They competed in contests, attended workshops and mingled with students from other schools. In Forensics, 2 students brought home prizes. In Extemporaneous, Tim Eiynck took 2nd place and Sam Van Vleet took 1st place in the state. Sam also took 2nd place poetry. Thank you for serving as our delegate as well. Two students from Woodgrove have served as officers in the Virginia Organization of German Students for the past few years. Alexandra Guendert has been an officer for 3 years and Max Hall has been an officer for 4 years. Our thanks go out to both of them for the way they have represented our high school in this state organization.

- Congratulations to the following students who competed at the Virginia DECA State Leadership conferences in Virginia Beach over the weekend: Alex Charlton, David Fischer, Cody Pasielski, Rachel Pike, Davis Reagan, Jerod Warfel, Austin Wolf and Jake Yates. All Woodgrove competitors gave phenomenal performances. Alex Charlton and Jake Yates were recognized on stage for their work in achieving Gold Certification status for our school store. Rachel Pike and Austin Wolf received recognition on stage as state finalists in the SBE category, which included a comprehensive oral presentation on security and safety concerns for retail operations. Cody Pasielski received on stage honors for his performance on the comprehensive marketing exam in the category of Hospitality Services management and David Fischer received top honors for both of his role plays in the category of Business Finance. Competing againsts a pool of over 3,300 Virginia DECA students, our students carried away several victories. Three of our marketing students have earned the honor of continuing their competitive success at the International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, CA in late April. Go Woodgrove DECA!

- An immense thank you to everyone who participated in and attended the Dodgeball Tournament yesterday! The final total isn't in yet, but LOTS of money was raised for Boulder Crest, and the SCA wishes to thank everyone who contributed! The championship game of the tournament will be played next Friday at the Spring Pep Rally between the "Average Joses" and team "Off Men". You won't want to miss it.
- Attention all singers, dancers, musicians and performers!! We need you! If you are interested in Showcasing your talents at this year's Multicultural Musical Montage then we invite you to sign up for an audition. Tryout forms are available Monday 2/15-3/1 outside Room 307 and Fine Arts classrooms.
- Today, March 1, join the Latin Club for a trip ro Roman Britain! After school, the club will be viewing *The Eagle*, in which a dedicated Roman soldier tries to recover his legion's standard from the local British tribes. All are welcome; sign up with Mr. Jefferson in room L202!
- The W Factor talent show is tonight at 7 pm! Get your tickets during Open Lunch or at the door for $5! We've got some great acts so come and support your fellow Wolverines!
- The History Bowl team has a mandatory practice today during open lunch in Room 305.
- The Creative Writing Club will meet during lunch today in room 208 to work on the submission packet for the VHSL Writing Contest. Write on!
- WHS Library will be hosting their annual read and rock-a-thon in the library on Read Across America Day - TODAY. Students and staff are invited to sign up for a 30-minute block of time to sit in a comfortable rocking chair and read. Snacks will be provided. Come to the library and sign up!
