It's hard to believe that we are already half way through second quarter, and the winter holidays are quickly approaching! There are many special events planned this month, so please be sure to check the school's website, or my calendar or monthly newsletter for upcoming dates and times for those events. During second quarter the students will continue to work on their reading and comprehension skills, practicing the steps of the writing process to help strengthen the composition of their writing, and continue building their vocabulary through our word study units. In math, the students will continue to practice finding the mean, median, mode, and range of given data; finish learning about and working with decimals; geometry; and measurement. During Social Studies the students will finish learning about the Southeast region of the United States and learn about the Midwest region. For science the students will finish learning about oceanography and begin learning about cells and the classification of living organisms.
Students should be reading for at least twenty minutes every day. They should also be getting their reading logs signed by a parent every weekend. I check reading logs on Monday to verify that they have done their reading for the previous week. Usually, there will be no homework on Friday nights; however, depending on changes in the schedule, exceptions may be made. Please check your child’s agenda and homework folder each night, or as often as possible, so that you are aware of your child’s homework assignments each day. All homework is due the following day unless otherwise specified. Late homework will be counted for partial credit if turned in one day late (excluding absences). Missing assignments for the week will be completed during Terrific Tuesday time. (Terrific Tuesday is a privilege of extra recess, in the afternoons on Tuesdays, earned by the students who have turned in and completed all of their class work and homework assignments for the week.)
